This almost illusory title was made up just before "The song is You"-festival concert in Warzawa in November 2008; during that concert day I had been secretly posing and was sneaking among the pigeons of one big square, which actually was a big roundabout, trying to get their attention, but in vain...only one elderly woman got their attention, obviously since she was feeding them with polish bread, or maybe it wasnt only the bread...or that it was polish...maybe it was her whole life experience which made her release the small pieces of bread with exactly that right timing, who knows?

Landing platforms, truss, tracks, steps, handrail, ... the complexity of this mechanism is a real opportunity for any listener. Even though the original components (wood...) are progressively replaced with modern ones, like the elevator this machinery still sounds like a heroic invention from the Industrial Revolution (second half of the XIX th century). And while the technology evolves, the idea remains the same.
When I first started listening to these systems, 10 years ago, I paid attention to the concept: mechanical transport of one's body through the city. Opposite to the compound like elevator (a closed space), escalators provide you with open space. Moving in one direction, like traveling through a movie (a cinematic vision), your body is carried slowly into a specific city location. For this short time (from few seconds to several minutes) you are completely devoted "to slide" through the city. Suddenly, your body moves from the static ground... you escalate.

tarab: utility (2009)

Compiled from a series of recordings collected on wanderings through the northern suburbs of Melbourne. The city heard through holes in the ground. Various sized utility holes. Rather than generating a sound of their own, most of the holes I came across act as a trap or filter for the sounds of the city. Their locations, what time I found them and their particular sound qualities dictated what sounds I heard, or in many cases did not hear.

Characters at the Water Margin

From the road I can hear the leaves and branches of the tree clattering wildly on the hillock. The enormous scale of this sound seems amiss though, as I observe the relatively calm motion of the treetop. Yet, it is a windy afternoon, and I do have to pull my jacket closed and duck my head as I cross the road and climb the soggy green slope.

Once beneath the tree, almost completely sealed off from daylight, I realize it is not the wind that drums inside the canopy. Rather, downward, through a jag in a heap of roots I see that a buried stream rushes through the guts of the hillock, thundering across rock towards the water that passes beneath the bridge.

The smell of dung in the pastures at my back, I step down into the dune.
The shadows of the tall, sharp grasses beat across the sand.
The surf of this small bay is remarkably sonorous, especially when it draws back from the gray lip of sand. I sit for a while, watching the unimpressive waves coming in from the sea. Still, the sound overwhelms this corner of sky and I feel a throb intermittently in my sternum. Shortly, flies swarm at my ankles and so I get up and head down to the waterline, finding not sand but a litter of gray and white stones. As the next wave breaks and recedes, I step forward into the water and feel that the stones like eggs roll and tumble upon the bottom.
So this is the loud mouth of such a modest landscape!

Below the weir, the rocks are stacked as if with a purpose. If I were to move one, subtly, how might this change the shape of the water flowing down? Which vowel might ring out from the changing pockets of air?

Recorded in Connemara, Ireland, Los Cocos, Mexico, Lake Nelson, New Zealand and New Smithville, Pennsylvania, 2007-2008.

Adam Sonderberg works with concrète-based forms utilizing the computer as a discreet processing and assembly tool. Sonderberg is also Co-director of the Dropp Ensemble and 1/3 of Haptic.

Katherine Young writes electroacoustic music, often using flexible forms and expressive, timbre-focused notations. As a bassoonist, Young improvises, performs new chamber music, and plays with rock bands.

In addition to their work as a duo and in various ad-hoc groupings, Sonderberg and Young previously worked together in the trio Civil War.

David Dunn | Western Harvester Ants (Pogonomyrmex Occidentalis)

Two forms of sound making have been well documented in ants:drumming against substratum and stridulation using specialised organs adapted for this purpose. The resultant sounds appear to serve four particular functions: alarm, recruitment, termination of mating by females, and modulation of other communication (usually chemical) and forms of behaviour. Ants stridulate with the hindmost body section, the gaster, which sports a ridged patch that rubs against a neighbouring file-like edge. When the gaster is raised and lowered, it produces a stridulatory chirp from the scraping action.

The drum head and metal snare are responding to the standing waves created by feedback using an AKG 414 microphone (pointed at the drum) through stereo PA speakers. High- and low-shelving and mid-band parametric filters on a Mackie mixer are used to tune the standing waves, some of which are inaudible on their own, but can be perceived by how the eBow snare reacts.

Bhob Rainey: A Flickering Bid

In the mid-1800s, Adolphe Sax set out to create what would essentially be a loud-ass clarinet. At least, "loud" was the dominant criterion. He apparently liked military bands and wanted some blaring (and portable) woodwind to enter the ranks. Of course, he also produced "classical" models of his invention, but, according to rumors, a rather vindictive German composer who had a beef with Sax conspired to keep the instrument away from the European canon. I'm inclined to think that the uncontrolled squawking sound contributed as much to this phenomenon as did the putative conspiracy. In any case, the classical models grew quite rare early in the instrument's history.

We all know by now that the saxophone found another home in popular music, which, for a time, was called Jazz. Its strident sound sat very well on top of all manner of percussion, and in the hands of some masterful players, that baby could really cry. And it cried and whispered and sang and screamed... and so much of that still sounds just fantastic and so un-marching band-like that who knows which way the old Belgian is twisting in his grave. But you have to admit that sometimes the crying sounds as if at least one teary eye is gazing towards an Oscar. And everyone knows to regard that coquettish whisper with some suspicion. The sax rarely takes off its performance face.

Still, you might sometime happen upon a stubbly one, alone, hunched over the bar. You're friendly, and it responds politely enough, if a bit distant. The conversation seems bound for nowhere, but a silent gulf, and this late hour, opens into a stammering confession. The sax is talking to no one in particular, using names and mentioning details you could never know about; not exactly making sense, but conveying a kind of hurt - the kind we're better off having trouble expressing. You get it. You know it's a proud hurt, one you wouldn't want to lose but rarely want to show. You want to be the nameless consolation the sax is seeking as much as you want the sax to be too drunk to remember you tomorrow. For now, you're helping each other, and it's going to be okay even if it never changes because it's been okay before, even great, and it hadn't changed then, either, did it? So you cut the guy a mile of slack and just listen. And one little world disappears, so that the other just hovers for a while.

Alfredo Costa Monteiro: Clair de bee

Clair de bée is a piece where the only sound source is paper, and clearly places itself into the continuity of ‘musique concrète'. Here, as in other paper pieces, the proposal is to track the sound where it's hidden in its less obvious form: the paper matter is transfigured, metamorphosed into a particular musicality. Through a phenomenological approach, "Clair de bée" is an unveiling of the sound matter which is melted until confusion.

Springwork 1 is the first in a series of works exploring the timbral and tonal complexities generated by plucking selected springs. Chosen carefully from my collection of found and retrieved springs, they were attached to a contact mic'd metal plate and recorded. Subsequent editing included the removal of each sounds attack and then increasing the gain of the decaying sound. Recorded in Manchester. Summer 2008

The score is 10 minutes in duration. When the piece is played this specified duration is left to the perception of the performer, rather than the clock, to follow. The performance that takes place within this perceived 10 minutes is then shaped by the performer's sense of time. The actions occur as a result of these delineated durations.

For this recording, a radio was the instrument. The setting was an early May morning along the Landwehrkanal in Kreuzberg, Berlin. The sound of a generator is in close proximity, along with wind, people passing, morning songbirds, and a vehicle.

This piece consists of a score (Ascending Series (2)) arranged in this case for the ensemble at hand during the Wandelweiser days in Neufelden in July, 2008. We were there as guests of artist Joachim Eckl (heim.art). The piece is to be played outdoors and/or accompanied by a field recording. The field recording used here was made by the composer near a waterfall in the river Die Grosse Mühl that runs through the Oberösterreich region and into the Danube. Besides the water itself, the town bells, cicadas and various voices and autos from the nearby train station are clearly audible, along with a host of unidentified environmental sounds. The recording was played back into the small concert space and there a simultaneous live recording was made of the ensemble piece. (We thus have a field recording situation for the recording of the piece itself.) The instrumental score stands in a somewhat variable relation to the recording environment. At times it is completely submerged, at other times, clear harmonies emerge: mostly it floats between these poles.

Lawrence English: Gradually you feel the tide at your neck

This work is an edit from a series of hydrophonic recordings made on the sunshine coast this past autumn. I was interested in trying to capture the 'grain' of the ocean. Unlike sand in other parts of the world, many of Australia's beaches have a beautiful variation in sand grains, from ultra-fine particles through to larger shell fragments that when agitated in the surf create a wonderfully delicate sound character. This filigree-like sound in combination with the outright brutality of the surf itself (which was violent to say the least during these recordings, and in fact dumped me and the recording device part way through the recordings) created the perfect contrast that summarises the atmosphere of the ocean in this area - a million tiny pieces in one swelling tidal wash.

'When I lived in Tucson Arizona i was a cable TV subscriber. One of the public access channels was a NASA feed which would show live footage from whatever space shuttle was currently orbiting the planet. I could watch this (mostly silent) show all day, and I miss it now. I wonder if it would be possible to broadcast sound from space in the same way. A dedicated radio station or web site relaying these sounds around the clock would be a wonderful thing.'
